While waiting for responses on my "tell me of good books" post, I started reading Charles Stross's Halting State. Y'know, it's rather fascinating to read about a future so near. So very near, I say --
as the drone of fans of our pet cluster storage rack next door rises to a scream (completely normal for this stage of the operation, or so they tell me),
as I remember that a coworker has been running around for weeks with his mobile phone and Bluetooth headset at the ready, opening (or closing) portals around town in the augmented reality overlays of Ingress,
as, finally, I think back to having been, just last week, at a dinner where the director of Waterloo's Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics talked to us about the current state of quantum computing research, the group of "us" including representatives of the Tri-Cities, the Region of Waterloo, and about ten countries.

Oh have you seen this:

Stross cancelled the third book in the "Halting State" trilogy because reality caught up to his "near future"

*That* is absolutely awesome. For some definition of "awesome".
