Latest book finished: Paolo Bacigalupi's Pump Six and Other Stories. Overall a pleasant surprise. Eleven dark tales bound by the common themes of environmental post-apocalypse and genetic engineering gone awry, some of them very good. "The People of Sand and Slag", for instance. "The Calorie Man". "The Tamarisk Hunter". "Pump Six" itself. As far as I know, this is the author's first collection of stories, published in 2008, a year prior to his first novel The Windup Girl. Having read both, I think that the stories are better. Not without fault, but do read if you are interested in this particular flavor of breakdown and destruction: intellectual property police, the world grown much smaller for the lack of oil, and the cumulative effects of pollution.

Some of the stories can even be found online! See The Tamarisk Hunter.

This is going to be my next book to read.
Any other recommendations in the same genre?
